Crocodile, or the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) in particular, is a kind of fascinating animal for biologists, because of their living habit and marvelous immune system. The wild American alligators are very territorial animals, most of them live in marsh environment that harbor infectious microbes that may thrive on serious wounds, which is rather common for the reptile during territorial disputes or by human activities. These conflicts often leave with severe injuries such as gaping wounds and missing limbs. But despite the fact that they live in septic environment with high possibility of a wound infection, most alligators exhibit marvelous ability to heal their enormous wounds rapidly without fatal infection. And further study of American alligator also suggests a remarkable immune system should play a key role in these conditions.
Considering the incredibly powerful immune system, American alligator is a novel choice for monoclonal antibody discovery and research. The initial studies of crocodile immune system showed their antibodies are able to kill bacteria that were resistant to penicillin, such as Staphylococcus aureus. Currently, Merchant has published his in vitro studies based on serum from wild American alligator in Louisiana, which also indicated that American alligators have a more resilient and effective immune system than that of humans. This powerful immune system has shown the anti-parasitic, antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial properties, and is able to eradicate HIV virus in particular (Merchant et al. 2003, 2005). In this way, antibody from alligators is potentially meaningful to be established as a novel and valuable source in the discovery and development of relevant research realm.
