SLC34A2

Solute carrier family 34 member 2 (SLC34A2), also known as NPTIIb, NAPI-3B, NAPI-IIb or sodium-dependent phosphate transport protein 2B (NaPi2b), is a pH-sensitive sodium-dependent phosphate transporter that belongs to the SLC34A transporter family. Three transcript variants encoding two different isoforms have been found for this gene. In human, two different isoforms of protein can be produced by alternative splicing.

It is reported that SLC34A2 protein is highly expressed in lung and the expression of this protein is also detected in various tissues, including pancreas, ovary, kidney, testis, small intestine, prostate and mammary gland. This protein may play a role in actively transporting phosphate into cells via Na+ cotransport. SLC34A2 may be the main phosphate transport protein in the intestinal brush border membrane. Defects in SLC34A2 gene may cause pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis (PALM), which is a rare disease characterized by the deposition of calcium phosphate microliths throughout the lung.
