The ability to rapidly evaluate the role of normal and abnormal genes as well as gene products from hundreds of tissues at once is often required in basic and translational research. For instance, the potential prognostic, diagnostic, and therapeutic importance of a cancer gene candidate is directly related to its gene or protein expression patterns and levels in tumors encompassing different stages and grades of disease. Tissue microarrays are a new high-throughput technique emerged for this purpose. Typically, histological sections of paraffin-embedded tissue cores with diameter of 0.6-2 mm are densely and systematically placed on individual glass microscopic slides. Tests performed on conventional histological samples including H&E staining, immunohistochemistry, and in situ hybridization, can be done separately or in parallel on tissue microarrays.
