- Overview
- EPH receptor A4 (ephrin A receptor 4) is a protein encoded by the EPHA4 gene in humans.
This gene belongs to the ephrin receptor subfamily of the protein tyrosine kinase family. EPH and EPH-related receptors are involved in mediating developmental events, especially in the nervous system. The receptors in the EPH subfamily usually have a single kinase domain and an extracellular region, which contains a Cys-rich domain and two fibronectin type III repeats. The ephrin receptors are divided into two categories based on the similarity of their extracellular domain sequences and their affinity for binding ephrin-A and ephrin-B ligands.
In 2012, a publication in Natural Medicine revealed the link between EPHA4 and the neurodegenerative disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The defective gene in this gene makes the life of ALS patients more complete than the gene The patient is longer. This opens the way for the development of this currently incurable disease.
