Interleukin 1β (IL-1β) is also known as leukocyte pyrogen, endogenous leukocyte mediator, monocyte factor, lymphocyte activating factor, etc. It is a cytokine protein encoded by IL1B gene in humans. Interleukin 1 (IL-1) has two genes: IL-1 alpha and IL-1 beta (the gene). The IL-1β precursor is cleaved by cytoplasmic cysteine protease 1 (interleukin 1β converting enzyme) to form mature IL-1β.
