- Overview
- Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is an interleukin that acts as both a pro-inflammatory cytokine and an anti-inflammatory muscle factor. In humans, it is encoded by the IL6 gene.
In addition, osteoblasts secrete IL-6 to stimulate osteoclast formation. Many vascular smooth muscle cells also produce IL-6 as a proinflammatory cytokine. The role of IL-6 as an anti-inflammatory actin is mediated by its inhibitory effect on TNF-α and IL-1 and the activation of IL-1ra and IL-10.
Early evidence suggests that in the context of a broader coronavirus pandemic, IL-6 can be used as an inflammatory marker of severe COVID-19 infection with a poor prognosis.
