- Overview
- Syndecan 1 is a protein encoded by the SDC1 gene in humans. This protein is a transmembrane (type I) heparan sulfate proteoglycan and is a member of the Syndecan proteoglycan family. Syndecan-1 protein plays the role of integral membrane protein, and participates in cell proliferation, cell migration and cell-matrix interaction through its extracellular matrix protein receptors. Syndecan-1 is a sponge of growth factors and chemokines, is mainly bound by heparan sulfate chains. Syndecans-mediated internalization of HIV-1 tat protein requires cell binding, cell signaling, cytoskeletal organization and Syndecan receptors.Altered syndecan-1 expression has been detected in several different tumor types. Syndecan 1 may be a marker of plasma cells.
