FCER2

Fc fragment of IgE receptor II (FCER2), also known as CD23, is a B-cell specific antigen, and a low-affinity receptor for IgE. It plays an important role in B cell growth and differentiation, and the modulation of IgE production. FCER2 also has a soluble secreted form, in which it works as a potent mitogenic growth factor. Different from many of the antibody receptors, FCER2 is a C-type lectin. It is expressed on activated macrophages, follicular dendritic cells, mature B cells, platelets, as well as eosinophils. FCER2 has two forms, CD23a and CD23b.
In general, FCER2 is likely to serve a role in modulation of IgE synthesis, when expressed on B cells. It has also been proven that the gene encoding FCER2 was related to atopy, the improved risk of exacerbations in patients with asthma, and high serum IgE levels. Additionally, in flow cytometry, FCER2 is useful in the differentiation of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CD23-positive) from mantle cell lymphoma (CD23-negative). It also enables to be proven in germinal centre B-cells via immunohistochemistry, but it is not present in the resting cells of the surrounding mantle zone.
