FN1

Fibronectin 1 (FN1), also known as CIG, FNZ, MSF, ED-B, FINC, GFND, LETS, or GFND2, belongs to the fibronectin superfamily. Fibronectins are a series of high molecular-weight membrane associated glycoproteins that interact with matrix components, including collagen, heparan sulfate proteoglycans, and fibrin.

The FN1 gene contains three regions that are subject to alternative splicing, a process that creates 20 potential different transcript variants. Proteolytic processing is also observed in at least one of the transcript variant encoded FN1 isoforms.

Function wise, fibronectins are involved in cell adhesion, motility, opsonization, maintaining cell shape, and wound healing. FN1 also participates in the fibronectin fibrillogenesis cell-mediated matrix assembly and relegates osteoblast compaction, especially for osteoblast mineralization. It has also been demonstrated to be involved in the regulation of osteoblast mediated type I collagen deposition.
