MUC1

MUC1, also known as PEM, PEMT, Episialin, is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein that belongs to the mucin family. Human MUC1 is comprise of an extracellular domain (ECD), a transmembrane segment, and a cytoplasmic tail. The major portion of the protein is composed of a highly polymorphic variable number tandem repeats in the extracellular domain.

MUC1 plays an important role in intracellular signaling and forming protective mucous barriers on epithelial surfaces. MUC1 is reported to be overexpressed in epithelial tumors, such as breast or ovarian cancer, particularly on the apical surface. Its expression has also been reported in the activated and non-activated T-cells. The surface localization and unique overexpression level of MUC1 makes it an ideal target for cancer immunotherapy using antibody-based agents.
