MUC5AC

Mucin 5AC (MUC5AC), also known as TBM or MUC5, encoded by MUC5AC gene, is a major ingredient of airway mucus proteins. It plays a key role in maintaining the elasticity and adhesion characteristics of airway mucus proteins. The expression of MUC5AC gene is regulated by multiple cytokines. The IL-13 can up-regulate the MUC5AC expression by the activated of epidermal growth factor receptor(EFGR), STAT signaling pathway and activated chloride channels by calcium ions (CLCAs). Overexpression of the MUC5AC gene is a symptom of airway mucus hypersecretion, which can trigger reduplicative bacterial infections and lead to chronic airway inflammatory diseases. However, the deficiency of MUC5AC may have normal mucociliary transport and anti-bacterial defense.
The MUC5AC is restrictedly expressed in the stomach. A number of studies have been shown that MUC5AC is associated with the progression of various diseases, including mucinous cysts of the pancreas, pancreatic cancer, colon cancer, asthma, ampullary carcinoma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, rhinitis.
