NGF

Nerve growth factor (NGF), also known as NGFB or HSAN5, encoded by NGF gene, is a member of the NGF-beta family which is essential for the correct development of the nervous system. There are two kinds of forms of NGF presence (mature form NGF and proNGF). The encoded protein is a proNGF which is proteolytically cleaved to the mature form. It is reported that the NGF and proNGF both exhibit biological activity that can influence the growth and differentiation of neurons. Interestingly, proNGF can induce the neurons apoptosis, with an opposite biological effect in NGF. The studies have been shown that NGF can promote differentiation of embryonic towards specialized cells of the nervous system.
The NGF is widely expressed in multiple human tissues, such as appendix, endometrium, heart, kidney, ovary, gall bladder, prostate, mall intestine. It is proved that the NGF is associated with the progression of many diseases, including allergic rhinitis, prostate cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, gastric carcinoma, cough hypersensitivity, preeclampsia, dementia, ovarian cancer.
