PROM1

Prominin 1 (PROM1), also known as CD133 antigen, P41, AC133, MCDR2, STGD4, CORD12, PROML1 or MSTP061, is a pentaspan transmembrane glycoprotein with a highly restricted expression on plasma membrane protrusions of epithelial and other cell types. The expression of human CD133 protein is identified in various tissues, including endothelial progenitor cells, hematopoietic stem cells, glioblastoma, neuronal and glial stem cells, as well as adult kidney, mammary glands, trachea, salivary glands, placenta, digestive tract, and testes. Multiple studies have indicated this protein may play a role in cell differentiation, proliferation and apoptosis, and mutations in this gene can cause retinitis pigmentosa and Stargardt disease. What's more, this protein is widely used as a marker for hematopoietic stem cells in transplant models and simultaneously, it is a marker of tumor initiating cells, emerging as an important target for tumor immune therapy.
