Solute carrier family 44 member 4 (SLC44A4), also known as CTL4, NG22, TPPT, or C6orf29, is a sodium-dependent transmembrane transport protein which belongs to the CTL (choline transporter-like) family. Earlier reports have shown that there are three transcript variants encoding different isoforms for SLC44A4. The SLC44A4 protein is glycosylated at various sites and also undergo phosphorylation as another post translational modification.
Previous studies have proposed that isoforms of SLC44A4 may be involved in the uptake of choline by cholinergic neurons. The mutations or defects in the SLC44A4 gene can cause sialidosis, a lysosomal storage disease. SLC44A4 has been associated with colorectal cancer and it is now being developed as a target for antibody-based immunotherapies.
