ST8SIA1

ST8 alpha-N-acetyl-neuraminide alpha-2,8-sialyltransferase 1 (ST8SIA1), also known as GD3S or SIAT8, encoded by ST8SIA1 gene, is a member of gangliosides glycosyltransferase family 29. It can promote the precursor GM3 to obtain sialic acid from CMP-sialic acid to produce gangliosides GD3 and GT3. Gangliosides can regulate cell proliferation, migration, adhesion, and angiogenesis which exert an essential role in tumor cells invasion and metastasis. In short, ST8SIA1, as a GD3 synthase, can control the production of GD3 thereby indirectly regulating the tumor growth and metastasis.
The ST8SIA1 is restrictedly expressed in multiple tissues, such as brain, adrenal, lymph node, appendix, endometrium, lung, prostate, urinary bladder. A number of studies have been shown that ST8SIA1 is associated with the progression of various cancers, including breast cancer, colorectal cancer, melanoma, glioblastoma, and neuroblastoma. In estrogen receptor-negative breast cancer patients, the expression of ST8SIA1 gene is higher than the normal people. These findings suggest that ST8SIA1 may be a promising therapeutic target for tumors.
