Background
Isoglobopentaose is a specific glycosphingolipid and a key carbohydrate epitope found on the surface of mammalian cells. Its structure is a pentasaccharide chain attached to a ceramide lipid. This compound is closely related to the P blood group system and is also known as iGb5. It is a receptor for various pathogens, including the Shiga toxin from certain strains of E. coli.
