Background

7-hydroxycoumarin (7-OHC), also known as umbelliferone, is a widespread secondary metabolite produced from coumarin, distributed among the plants of the Apiaceae family, like coriander, garden angelica, and carrot. Numerous previous research findings have revealed that 7-OHC possesses various excellent pharmacological properties, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-hyperglycemic, antitumor, anti-hyperlipidemic, and immunomodulatory activities. It is also demonstrated that 7-OHC can enter the cells to facilitate targeted therapy due to its hydroxyl group, and it brings about fewer side effects compared to coumarin. In a recent study, 7-OHC is reported to reduce kidney injury caused by colistin by decreasing the level of histone deacetylase 1 and the activation of the Nrf2 signaling pathway. Another study comprehensively evaluates its therapeutic effects in vivo and in vitro against gastrointestinal diseases, proving that 7-OHC has significant biological activities and is not toxic, indicating its promising potential for pharmacological use.
