Background

AR (Androgen receptor), also referred to NR3C4 (Nuclear receptor subfamily 3 group C member 4), SBMA (Spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy), HUMARA, or DHTR, is a 99 kDa dihydrotestosterone receptor located on the chromosome Xq12. It is a member of the ligand-dependent nuclear receptors, activated class I steroid receptors, which also includes progesterone receptor, glucocorticoid receptor, and mineralocorticoid receptor. AR protein is widely expressed in various kinds of tissues, such as embryonic tissue, testis, prostate, kidney, and certain specific regions of the brain (CNS). Its functions are involved in gene expression by actions as a DNA-binding transcription factor, cell-to-cell signaling, cell proliferation regulation, and intracellular signal transduction, which lead to the regulation of biological processes including cell development, proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Deoxyribonucleic acid is a molecule that carries most of the genetic instructions used in the development, functioning and reproduction of all known living organisms and many viruses.
