Background

HLA-A, or Human Leukocyte Antigen-A, is a gene within the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) in humans. It encodes a class I MHC protein which is vital to the immune system. The function of HLA-A is to present antigens to cytotoxic T cells, which are a type of immune cell responsible for recognizing and eliminating infected or abnormal cells. HLA-A molecules bind to short peptide segments that come from intracellular proteins and present them on the surface of cells. This presentation allows cytotoxic T cells to inspect the displayed peptides and initiate an immune response if they recognize a foreign or aberrant peptide. Its genetic polymorphisms influence individual susceptibility to infectious diseases, autoimmune diseases, and certain cancers. HLA-A matching is crucial to minimize the risk of rejection in tissue and organ transplantation. Additionally, studying HLA-A alleles and their peptide-binding specificities aids in vaccine development, personalized medicine, and understanding immune responses to diseases.
