Staphylococcus aureus employs diverse strategies to evade complement-mediated host defenses, and this study introduces a novel antibody-independent probe, derived from the staphylococcal Sbi protein, to quantify complement deposition. This new tool enables a more precise measurement of complement fixation on wild-type cells, which express a full repertoire of immune evasion proteins, thereby demonstrating that complement evasion varies significantly among genetically diverse S. aureus strains, suggesting that this variation represents a significant factor in the differential virulence observed across isolates.
