Information
Introduction The lectin complement pathway is one of three important pathways of the complement system activation, which makes great contribution to the microorganism infection defense. The lectin complement pathway usually is initiated by the binding of mannose-binding lectin (MBL) or ficolin to mannose-containing polysaccharides (mannans) of microorganism surfaces. The binding of MBL to polysaccharides activatese the serine proteases MASP-1 and MASP-2, which then subsquently cleave complement C4 into C4a and C4b, complement C2 into C2a and C2b. The C4a and C2b are released into the microenvironment acting as potent cytokines. The C4b and C2a bind to the membrane forming the MBL pathway C3 convertase (C4bC2a), which cleaves C3 into C3a and C3b. Subsquently, C3b binds to C4b and C2a forming the MBL pathway C5 convertase (C4bC2aC3b).
This Lectin Complement Pathway ELISA Kit aims to detect the specific activation of the pathway using labeled antibodies specific for the C5b-9 complement complex. The amount of C5b-9 is directly proportional to the functional activity of complement system.
