Background

ALOX5 is a non-heme iron-containing dioxygenase that encodes lipoxygenase and metabolizes AA into hydroperoxyderivatives (5-HPETE) and further into 5-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (5-HETE), conferring invasion, growth, and chemopreventive advantage in cancer cells. ALOX5 mediates lipid peroxidation by producing lipid peroxides. Serum ALOX5 is elevated in breast cancer, and gastrointestinal cancer and serves as a promising therapeutic target. The high ALOX5 expression also serves as an independent prognostic predictor of poor prognosis in low-grade glioma (LGG).
