Background
AXIN1 is a cytoplasmic protein consisting of a regulation of the G-protein signaling (RGS) domain and a disheveled axin (DIX) domain. AXIN1 is an important negative regulator of the Wnt/β-catenin cascade by forming a cytoplasmic phosphorylated destruction complex with APC, GSK3β, and casein kinase-1. Upon stimulation of cells with Wnt, AXIN1 is recruited to the membrane by phosphorylated LRP5/6.
Mutations in the AXIN1 gene have been associated with various carcinomas. Accumulating studies have shown that AXIN1 can potentially be used as biomarkers for early diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis for various carcinomas. Moreover, AXIN1 in plasma or serum is a potential new biomarker for endometriosis.
