Diagnostic Tools of Childhood Asthma

As with most initial assessments, history and physical examination are done to identify recognized symptom patterns of childhood asthma. Besides, some specific lung function tests can be performed to assess airways obstruction, including forced spirometry, plethysmography, multiple breath washout, and airway resistance using the interrupter techniques. Chest radiography can be useful in acute asthma. Exhaled nitric oxide measurement is recommended if there is diagnostic uncertainty after lung function tests and assessments of reversible airflow obstruction have been made. As asthma often coexists with allergy, allergy testing can be performed to establish the presence of atopy and identify specific aeroallergens. Unlike adults, invasive tools such as bronchoscopy can’t be performed in children, resulting in a growing interest in the development of noninvasive methods to aid in the diagnosis of childhood asthma.
