Creative Biolabs is an undisputed leading provider of antibody development and generation services. Now, we provide in vitro diagnostic (IVD) antibody development services targeting various biomarkers of a wide variety of diseases. Especially, Creative Biolabs offers high-quality antibody development services for diagnostic applications targeting Cryptosporidium.

Introduction of Cryptosporidium

Cryptosporidium, a microscopic parasite, is a genus of apicomplexan parasitic alveolates, and it can cause gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases, which including watery diarrhea (intestinal cryptosporidiosis) with or without a persistent cough (respiratory cryptosporidiosis) in both immunodeficient and immunocompetent individuals. Both the parasite and the diseases are generally referred to as "Crypto." Many species of Cryptosporidium are supposed to infect animals, while some of which also infect humankind. The spore phase of Cryptosporidium (oocyst) can survive for prolonged periods without a host. Moreover, oocyst can also resist several prevalent disinfectants, particularly the chlorine-based disinfectants. Water (drinking water and recreational water) has been the most familiar way to spread Cryptosporidium, while it can be spread by several different ways. The Cryptosporidium parasite also could be transmitted person to person.

Correlation of Cryptosporidium and Food & Water

Studies have shown that Cryptosporidium can infect a wide range of vertebrate hosts, such as mammals, rodents, birds, reptiles, and fish. And they are ubiquitous in natural water sources throughout the world and are acquired through contaminated water, usually leading to illness. In addition, Cryptosporidium (and other protozoan parasites) can contaminate food either as a surface contaminant or within the food matrix. Most importantly, both humans and animals may be exposed to Cryptosporidium through consumption of contaminated water and food as well as by direct contact with contaminated soil and infected hosts. Also, Cryptosporidium can be released into the environment through the fecal matter of infected hosts in the form of oocysts and remains potentially infectious for several months depending upon the environmental conditions and stresses.

Cryptosporidium Gastroenteritis

Cryptosporidium infection (also called cryptosporidiosis or 'crypto') is an intestinal infection caused by a tiny parasite called Cryptosporidium, which can lead to gastroenteritis. Infection begins with the ingestion of the oocysts by the host. Oocyst is the exogenous stage of Cryptosporidium, consisting of four sporozoites within a tough two-layer wall excreted in feces. When the cryptosporidia get into the human body, they travel through to the small intestine and then burrow into the walls of intestines. Subsequently, cryptosporidia are excreted in feces. The main symptom of cryptosporidiosis is watery diarrhoea which always accompanied by stomach cramps. Other symptoms occur less commonly, which include fever, vomiting and loss of appetite. A Cryptosporidium infection in most healthy people often causes a bout of watery diarrhea and usually goes away within a week or two. However, for the individuals with a compromised immune system, a Cryptosporidium infection can be life-threatening in default of proper treatment.
