General Description of IL1RN
IL1RN exists in the whole organism and different tissues, including lymph node, brain, heart, colon, adipocyte, kidney, liver, lung, thyroid, adrenal gland, skin, placenta, ovary, prostate, and testis. It is also expressed physiologically in both adult and embryonic stages. Except for these normal tissues, IL1RN is presented in numerous cancers such as gastric cancer, cervical cancer, lymphoblastic and myelogenous leukemias, breast cancer, endometrial cancer, bladder cancer, colorectal cancer, lung cancer and brain tumors. IL1RN is classified into four isoforms. When interleukin 1 (IL-1) binds to IL1-receptor induces proinflammatory reaction and gene expression. Blocking of the receptor by IL1RN prevents this response.
IL-1 Receptor Antagonist in Sepsis
Via clinical and experimental evidence, it has been suggested that IL1 serves as the mediation, in part, in disease such as shock, arthritis, osteoporosis, colitis, leukemia, diabetes, wasting and atherosclerosis. Inhibition of this cytokine has been an alternative strategy in the areas of disease research and new drug development. IL1RN is a naturally-occurring IL-1 inhibitor that blocks binding of IL-1 to its receptors. IL1RN reduces the severity of sepsis in animals and is presently being tested in humans. In addition, reanalysis of a Prior Phase III Trial has demonstrated that IL1RN is associated with reduced mortality in sepsis patients with features of macrophage activation syndrome. Based on current research, IL1RN plays a role in the diagnosis of sepsis.
