Introduction of Mumps
Mumps is a member of the Paramyxovirus family in the genus Rubulavirus. It is a single-stranded negative-sense RNA virus that is spherical, but often pleiomorphic and approximately 200 nm in diameter. Mumps is contracted from respiratory secretions by contact, droplets, or fomites. Prodromes of mumps infection often include fever, anorexia, malaise, and headache with incubation ranging from 12 to 25 days. Generally, symptoms in adults are more severe than in children. What’s more, sometimes it is associated with various complications such as meningitis, pancreatitis, permanent deafness, and testicular inflammation which uncommonly results in infertility. Most importantly, mumps can be transmitted from one person to another through saliva, nasal secretions, and close personal contact.

Mumps is a well-known childhood viral disease that is endemic throughout the world, with an annual worldwide incidence of approximately 100–1000 per 100 000.The peak incidence is late winter and early spring. It is uncommon in infants younger than 1 year, probably because of passively acquired antibody from the mother. Prior to the vaccine era, epidemics tended to occur every 2–5 years and up to 90% of children younger than 15 had mumps. Furthermore, it is most common in children aged 5–9, but can occur even in the setting of immunization and then may infect older children and young adults.
