KCNMA1, also known as KCa1.1 or BK channel, is a voltage gated potassium channel and characterized by their large conductance of potassium ions (K+) through cell membranes. This gene is essential for the regulation of several key physiological processes such as neuronal excitability. KCNMA1 is involved in different cancer-related processes including cell proliferation, apoptosis, response to hypoxia and to chemotherapeutic agents. Scientific evidence supports the hypothesis that K+ channels may be crucially involved in the oncogenesis process. KCNMA1 is significantly downregulated via a complex epigenetic regulation that involves miRNAs and DNA methylation. Studies revealed that KCNMA1 could be used as a therapeutic target in the early stages of colorectal cancer (CRC).
