Creative Biolabs has successfully established, optimized and commercialized various disease models, especially in non-human primates (NHPs). Based on our state-of-the-art technology platform, we are proud to present our acute renal failure (ARF) to our customers around the world. Our custom-oriented, highly-tailored research services aim at meeting each specific expectation and facilitating diverse drug discovery projects.

What is acute renal failure (ARF)?

Renal disease, also known as nephropathy or kidney disease, is caused by damage to or abnormal status of the kidney. In general, it can be divided into two subclasses according to different degrees of kidney damage, i.e. chronic renal failure (CRF), acute renal failure (ARF). ARF is characterized by the sudden loss of the kidney functions, like excreting wastes, concentrating urine, conserving electrolytes, and maintaining fluid balance. It is a frequent clinical problem that is associated with a mortality of between 50% and 80%.

ARF is usually divided into prerenal, intrinsic and postrenal. Prerenal ARF is caused by those that decrease blood flow to the kidney and thus give rise to a decrease in the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Intrinsic ARF appears when there is damage to the structures of the nephron such as the glomeruli, tubules, vessels, or interstitium. Acute tubular necrosis (ATN) is the major cause of intrinsic ARF that results from ischemic or nephrotoxic injury. Postrenal ARF refers to acute kidney injury caused by disease downstream of the kidney and most often occurs as a consequence of urinary tract obstruction.

Advantages of non-human primates

Non-human primates (NHPs) have quite a lot of similarities with human beings in physiological and behavioral characteristics, making them more accurate, predictable and valuable models of human diseases than other animal species. The NHP animal models are of great importance in regard to understanding the disease characteristics and development of effective therapy.

ARF models provided by Creative Biolabs

So far, commonly utilized ARF models contain ischemic-induced models, drug-induced models (cisplatin, NSAIDs, gentamicin, cysplatin, etc.), sepsis-induced models, etc. In clinical point of view, ischemia and sepsis are the main causes of ARF. Our team can tailor different ARF models according to the customers' needs. Besides, a series of standard tests will be performed to assess the etiology of ARF, including:

  • Complete blood count (CBC)
  • Serum biochemistries
  • Urine electrolytes
  • Urine analysis with microscopy
  • Kidney biopsy
  • Histology for infarct
