What are cardiovascular and metabolic disorders?

The increased prevalence of cardiovascular and metabolic disorders (e.g. type I diabetes, type II diabetes, and diet-induced obesity) brings an enormous risk for human society. With the continuously aging and increasing population, the unabated rise in these diseases is not likely to slow down in the near future. Therefore, effective treatments are urgently required, constituting a big challenge for human healthcare.

Why we use non-human primates (NHPs) models to study cardiovascular and metabolic disorders?

Animal models play important roles in determining the pathogenesis of and effective treatments for obesity and diabetes. Non-human primates (NHPs) are particularly useful for studying these disorders in comparison to other animal species, they share so many similarities with human beings in physiology, anatomy, behavior, organ mechanisms, and immunology, etc.

Typical cardiovascular and metabolic disorders models provided by Creative Biolabs

Type I diabetes is characterized by little or no insulin and occurs in an extremely low incidence in NHPs. We provide the well-established NHP type I diabetes induced by systemic administration of streptozotocin (STZ).

Type II diabetes represents a long-term metabolic disease status, which is mainly characterized by insulin resistance, high blood sugar and relative lack of insulin. Our company provides high-fat diet (HFD)-induced diabetic monkeys with lots of similarities to human diabetics.

We can conduct a comprehensive range of validating measures to evaluate the modeling outcomes and drug efficacy, including but not limited to:

  • Body weight, height, body mass index (BMI)
  • Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT)

  • Graded glucose infusion (GGI)
  • Euglycemic clamping
  • GI-bypass and gastric emptying
  • Clinical chemistry metabolic profiling

Diet-induced obesity

Obesity is a body condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to some extent that it may cause many health risks. We provide the well-characterized diet-induced obesity (DIO) model induced via feeding with high calorie (fat) diet (HCD). Spontaneous obese NHP model is also available upon request. Multidimensional endpoint measurements are provided according to customers' requirements:

  • Body weight, Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • Total fat assessment (e.g. BIA, WHR, and DEXA scanning)
  • Metabolic parameters (e.g. insulin, TG, TC, HDLc, LDLc, leptin levels, CRP, and C-peptide)
