What is chronic renal failure (CRF)?

Renal disease refers to a general disease status when the kidneys are damaged and can no longer remove wastes and extra water from the blood. Chronic renal failure (CRF), or chronic kidney disease (CKD), is characterized by the progressive loss of kidney function. Different from acute renal failure (ARF), which can have a rather quick/sudden occurrence, CRF often evolves gradually over weeks, months, or even years until the kidneys stop functioning finally. Some potential causes of CRF include:

  • Birth defects
  • Pyelonephritis
  • High blood pressure
  • Diseases associated with the immune system (e.g. glomerulonephritis, systemic lupus)
  • Acute kidney disease
