Background
As an essential part of IND-enabling, chronic toxicity determines adverse effects as the result of long-term exposure to a chemical/drug substance. It can manifest as direct lethality but more commonly refers to sublethal endpoints such as decreased growth, reduced reproduction, or behavioral changes such as impacted swimming performance. In addition, the study is usually conducted in rodent (usually rat) and non-rodent (usually dog) models in the intended route of human dosing.
