Fungi are everywhere. During the past years, fungal have emerged as important pathogens which cause multiple fungal infections. Of the estimated millions of species of fungal on the earth about 600 of those are known to make people sick and thus causing formidable mortality. As a leading company in drug discovery development, Creative Biolabs is capable of offering numerous antifungal drug discovery services for potential targets.

What is A Fungal Infection?

Fungi are everywhere as they can live in air, soil, water, plants as well as many indoor surfaces and on human body. Like many microbes, most fungi are helpful, but some types can be harmful to health. Fungal diseases are often caused by harmful fungi that are common in the environment. When harmful fungi invade the body, they can be difficult to kill, as they can survive in the environment and re-infect the person trying to get better. Based on the specific population that fungus infected, fungal disease can be classified into two different types, namely opportunistic fungal infections and primary fungal infections. In briefly, opportunistic infections are those that develop mainly in immunocompromised hosts while primary infections can develop in immunocompetent hosts.

What are the Symptoms of Fungal Infection?

Generally, different fungal infections have different symptoms. Mild fungal skin diseases can look like a rash and are very common. Fungal diseases in the lungs are often similar to other illnesses such as the flu or tuberculosis. Some fungal diseases like fungal meningitis and bloodstream infections are less common than skin and lung infections but can be deadly.

Who is Prone to Fungal Infection?

Studies have shown that those who are more likely to be infected by fungus include:

  • People with incompetent immune systems such as children, elderly people, people suffering severe disease.
  • People who sweat a lot since sweaty clothes and shoes can enhance fungus growth on the skin.
  • People who come in contact with a person suffering from a fungal infection.
  • People who frequent communal moist areas.
