Introduction of Local Toxicity Evaluation
The evaluation of local toxicity is an essential part of preclinical drug investigation. It is intended to study the potential adverse effects of test substances on the contact sites. Importantly, the frequency and duration of administration to animals should be determined by the proposed conditions of administration in clinical use. However, in those cases where local toxicity is being assessed in a “stand-alone” study, the application period should generally not exceed two weeks. Moreover, the test species should be chosen in relation to the intended administration routes of the product and on the endpoints to be investigated. Usually, an evaluation in one species and in a single-sex should be sufficient.
