SOPEth (1-Stearoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanol) is a specific Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) species, an abnormal phospholipid conjugate created in biological systems in the presence of ethanol (EtOH). Its synthesis is primarily catalyzed by Phospholipase D (PLD) transferring the phosphoethanol moiety from PC to EtOH. The resulting SOPEth is integrated into red blood cell membranes, conferring it a long detection window. As one of the five most abundant naturally occurring PEth isomers, SOPEth is commonly used as a highly specific and enduring biomarker for verifying ethanol exposure and consumption.
