1,2-Diacylglycerols (DAGs) are lipid second messengers generated via the hydrolysis of phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2) by Phospholipase C (PLC). DAGs remain within the plasma membrane due to their hydrophobic nature and are physiological activators of Protein Kinase C (PKC), a key enzyme in signal transduction pathways.
