Glycerophosphoinositol (GroPI) is a ubiquitous, water-soluble metabolite derived from phosphoinositides via the action of phospholipase A2 (PLA2) on Phosphatidylinositol (PI). PI is synthesized from CDP-diacylglycerol and inositol by phosphatidylinositol synthase. GroPI is structurally related to PI and serves as a key intermediate in the overall phosphoinositide metabolic cycle. It can also act as a building block for phosphoinositide polyphosphates in model systems, and is used to study cellular processes related to cell proliferation and survival.
