Glycerophosphoinositol 4-phosphate (GroPI(4)P) is a water-soluble, diffusable metabolite of the phosphoinositide signaling pathway. It is formed by the de-acylation of Phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate (PI(4)P). PI(4)P is the primary precursor for phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PI(4,5)P2) and plays fundamental roles in regulating sphingomyelin and glycosphingolipid metabolism as well as membrane trafficking at the exit point of the Golgi complex. GroPI(4)P itself has emerged as a bioactive lipid that modulates the actin cytoskeleton and is implicated in the regulation of Rho GTPases and T-cell signaling.
