Inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) is a universally utilized hydrophilic second messenger generated primarily by the enzyme Phospholipase C (PLC) through the hydrolysis of Phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2). The central function of IP3 is to bind to its specific receptors located on the membrane of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and other internal stores, triggering the rapid and transient release of intracellular calcium ions.
