NBD-labeled phosphatidylethanol

Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) is synthesized primarily in the liver via the transphosphatidylation reaction, where phospholipase D acts upon phosphatidylcholine (PC) when ethanol is present. This lipid associates with VLDL and HDL lipoprotein particles, undergoing transfer between them. PEth-lipoprotein complexes, particularly those involving HDL, are thought to confer a protective benefit against atherogenesis by stimulating the secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) from smooth muscle cells and the endothelium.
