Cellular PI or PtdIns is constructed by the enzyme phosphatidylinositol synthase, combining CDP-diacylglycerol and inositol. This lipid serves as the foundational material for all higher-phosphorylated phosphoinositide polyphosphates (via PI-kinases) and acts as the essential substrate for PI-PLC-mediated hydrolysis, which yields the key second messenger diacylglycerol (DAG).
