Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) production primarily involves the phospholipase D-catalyzed transphosphatidylation of phosphatidylcholine (PC). As the most stable and abundant circulating PEth metabolite, it results from the N-incorporation mechanism within erythrocyte membranes. The specific tracer, 1-palmitoyl-2-linoleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanol-d5 (d5-PLPEth), incorporates a completely deuterated ethanol headgroup, making it ideal for use as an analytical mass spectrometry reference standard.
