Overview of Hybridoma

Hybridoma technology is one of the most commonly used methods for the production of mAbs. In this process, the host animal is first immunized with a specific antigen, then antibody-producing B lymphocytes are isolated from the host and fused with an immortal myeloma cell line to form a hybridoma cell line, which combines the characteristics of antibody production and unlimited proliferation. These hybridoma cells are grown in the laboratory to produce mAbs directed against specific antigens. Additionally, favorable hybridoma cell lines can be cryopreserved for durable mAb production. Therefore, hybridomas are considered to be a vital avenue to maintain a convenient and inexhaustible supply of highly pure and specific mAbs.

Applications of Hybridoma

Since the hybridoma cells become stable and immortal, these cell lines allow unlimited production of a variety of different mAbs specific to a given antigen. Antigenic molecules include enzymes, hormones, and specific structures of viruses, bacteria, and eukaryotic cells. The mAbs generated by this method are highly sensitive and specific and play a crucial role in diagnosis, imaging, and immunotherapy. In addition, radioactively labeled or fluorescent-labeled mAbs were used as probes for the detection or imaging of tumor antigens in living systems. In conclusion, hybridoma technology is a perfect tool for the research of various fields such as toxicology, pharmacology, medicine, and cell molecular biology.
