A new human cell line, GIST-T1, was established from a metastatic plural tumor from a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) of the stomach in a Japanese woman, and was characterized by immunohistochemistry, conventional banding methods, comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH).

Tumorigenicity is defined the property of a cell to form tumors when inoculated into an immunosuppressed animal model. Generally, test cells and tumor cells as positive control are administered subcutaneously into immunosuppressed nude mice. The number of animals developing tumors are compared with a positive control reference cell line.
