Collagenase is a protease that cleaves the bond between a neutral amino acid (X) and glycine in the sequence Pro-X-Glyc-Pro, which is found with high frequency in collagen. Collagenase Type IV (gelatinase) has a marked substrate specificity for denatured collagen (gelatin). Collagenase Type IV contains low levels of tryptic activity and is frequently used for pancreatic islets and for applications where maintenance of receptor integrity is required.
