AR (Androgen Receptor), also named DHTR and NR3C4, belongs to the nuclear hormone receptor family. AR is a ligand-activated transcription factor that regulates eukaryotic gene expression, affecting cellular proliferation and differentiation in target tissues. Defects in AR are the cause of androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS), testicular feminization syndrome (TFM), spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SMAX1, also known as Kennedy disease), and may play a role in metastatic prostate cancer.
