Description
Type VI collagen is a structural component of microfibrils in connective tissues and the extracellular matrix of cultured fibroblasts. It is a heterotrimer composed of alpha-1(VI), alpha-2(VI), and alpha-3(VI) or alpha-5(VI) or alpha-6(VI). The COL6A1 gene encodes the alpha-1(VI) chain. Mutations in this gene are linked to Bethlem myopathy and Ullrich congenital muscular dystrophy.
