Description
C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute-phase protein synthesized by the liver in response to interleukin-6 (IL-6) during inflammation. CRP is a pentameric protein belonging to the pentraxin family and reacts with the C polysaccharide of *Streptococcus pneumoniae*. It plays a role in host defense by promoting agglutination, bacterial swelling, phagocytosis, and complement activation through calcium-dependent binding to phosphorylcholine. CRP is a key marker for inflammation.
