Desmosomes are specialized cell-cell junctions found in tissues like the epidermis and myocardium. These junctions are mediated by desmosomal cadherins, including desmogleins (DSG1-4) and desmocollins (DSC1-3), which facilitate calcium-dependent adhesion. DSG1 plays a vital role in epidermal barrier function and cell differentiation, with mutations linked to skin disorders such as striate palmoplantar keratoderma and SAM syndrome, a condition involving dermatitis and metabolic issues.
