Description
FABP3, also known as heart-type FABP or mammary-derived growth inhibitor (MDGI), is a small 15-kDa cytoplasmic protein transporting fatty acids and other lipophilic substances from the cytoplasm to the nucleus. It is most ubiquitously expressed in the heart and skeletal muscle. Recent studies find that CSF FABP3 levels are increased at early stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), as well as in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). This suggests that FABP3 could be used as a predictive factor for progression to dementia in different neurological disorders and used in the differential diagnosis between neurodegenerative diseases in combination with other biomarkers.
